I know it dates back to classic wow, but the idea that BRD fire elementals should have a 50% lower drop rate on stuff like heart of fire or elemental fire, than from lvl 48 normal mobs in searing gorge, is kinda nonsensical.
It seems to me like elites should have a better drop rate than normal mobs. Would promote farming diversity and better potential for skill expression.
I can't say why this is for certain but I could see it being for a few different reasons. First of all, choosing to go out and farm mobs in the open world is a singular choice. You're doing one thing with your time while you're doing that. Doing a BRD run, you're accomplishing multiple things. You're getting mob drops, you're getting better XP, you're getting quests done, and you have a chance at blue gear as well. So it does in my mind make sense for it to be balanced that way for those reasons alone.
Then we get into the issues of botting, automation, and people just being scummy. For example on Classic TBC it was extremely common to find bots farming Dungeons. Instead of being out in the open world where they would be pretty blatant and get reported, they can just hide in Dungeons and farm them endlessly. Now that said, I don't think we have that problem here, the devs seem to be extremely on point when it comes to banning bots and automation-- but I can see it being designed this way as an extra precaution in a sense?
And then the last consideration I guess would be similar to the first, because so many people *need* to do BRD, if the drop rates were buffed, there would be substantially more of those materials in the market and in many cases that could cause the market for those items to collapse. I love the economy in WoW, and it's one of the reasons I can't play modern WoW with the Tokens and all the open RMT. Managing an economy like this, balancing it so that things don't collapse, balancing the supply and demand, it's legitimately pretty intricate. I feel like this is actually probably the most likely reason that it is the way it is.
