A note to the OctoWoW team
If you're on the OctoWoW team, please take a look at Interact.dll with the new patch-5.mpq. Since the update it crashes the client with error #132 (access violation at 0x006CD8AB) while logging into some characters. Without it, the same characters log in fine. Players can work around it by removing the mod, but then they lose its features. I'm happy to share my crash reports if that helps.
!!!
Yesterday's OctoWoW update (a new ~59 MB patch-5.mpq) left me unable to log into my main character. Every time I picked it, the game crashed during loading with this error:
ERROR #132 (0x85100084) Fatal Exception
Exception: 0xC0000005 (ACCESS_VIOLATION) at 0023:006CD8AB
The instruction at "0x006CD8AB" referenced memory at "0x1764178B".
The memory could not be "read".
My other characters worked fine, and restarting the PC didn't help. Here's how I tracked it down, in case you hit the same thing.
Short version:
The cause was Interact.dll, one of the client mods the launcher loads. It doesn't seem to work with the new patch for some characters. Taking it out of dlls.txt fixed the crash.
What I tried, in order:
1. Disabling all addons. Didn't help. Normal addons (the ones in Interface\AddOns) weren't the cause.
2. Starting WoW.exe without the launcher. I expected this to skip the mods, but it doesn't. The OctoWoW client loads whatever is listed in dlls.txt itself. So that file is the one to edit.
3. Emptying dlls.txt and resetting the character's settings. I backed up dlls.txt, emptied it, and renamed my character's folder under WTF\Account\<account>\<realm>\<character> so the game would create fresh settings. Then I could log in.
4. Narrowing it down. I restored my old character settings and still got in, so the settings were fine. The only remaining difference was Interact.dll, which wasn't loaded during the login that worked.
The fix:
1. Close WoW completely.
2. Open dlls.txt in your OctoWoW game folder (next to WoW.exe).
3. Back it up, then delete the line Interact.dll.
4. Start the game by double-clicking WoW.exe.
The launcher can rewrite dlls.txt with its own list when it starts. If the crash comes back after using the launcher, check whether Interact.dll has reappeared in the file.
You lose what Interact does (interacting with things using a key) until it's updated. Everything else works normally.
